heater selector cables

Today I have had the dash out to replace the heater motor and resistors. Fixed the water jet pipes while i was in there. I discovered the cables that are attached to the heater selector switches on the dash are damaged and not working. My neighbour who was helping me said to get some bike cables and he will adapt them. I forgot to ask did he mean bike gear cables. Has anyone done this and used bike cable? Cheers, Jon.

The only problem I foresee is that T25 heater cables are much stiffer than bike cables to allow for the push-pull situation during use. Cycle cables may work fine on 'pull' (as they do on a cycle) but buckle the other way. It could be done I suppose but not without a major rethink and perfectly placed mounting points. With the time involved it'll probably be cheaper to just replace the cables.

Thanks for that. It did cross my mind regarding the pushing but I wasn't sure how they worked really. Are they available from Brickwerks? I had a look but wasn't entirely sure. Is this something that may be worth looking for second hand? Thanks, Jon.

If you are able to sort out the ends ( I can't remember offhand what they are like) piano wire is available easy and cheap enough which is what is needed for the push action. That is what I used to make a new cold start cable for my engine.

Piano wire, cool. I will take a look at that today, cheers. Not sure all the wires/wire ends are available. The lever that is moved to select cold or hot doesn't have anything attached to it so maybe it's gone missing. I may pop up a wanted add. I wonder if these often get sold on when someone is breaking a van.

Here's what I have to deal with. Will have a nosey through the Bentley later as I don't even know where to start.
