What size socket would I need to remove the fan switch please?

Have a feeling its 24mm....

Too dark now to fish out my spare and check.

Have the new one handy to plug the hole quick then you won't lose too much coolant. Oh and don't do it if the coolant too hot.

Apart from that pretty much straightforward.

Now oddly, I've just changed mine not 5 mins ago. I checked - its a whopping 30mm I reckon. However, its far easier to use an adjustable spanner from the side to undo it as I just did. If you use a socket it'll need to be a deep one.

Loosen it, undo slowly by hand, keeping pressure on it to minimise water loss, and as soon as you feel you're out of thread, move it out the way and push the new one in its place, doing it up by hand. Quick nip with the adjustable, job done. Most you'll get is a little water loss and indigestion noise from the rad.

I must say, the one that came out was NOTHING like the one that replaced it. Will post a pic shortly...

Make of this what you will. All the ones I've seen (new ones) are completely flat on this face. I did boil my engine (or close to) following a water pump failure a while back so perhaps the elevated temperatures killed it. I wonder if the flat face is a cap which has dropped inside the radiator? This is now my third in 10 years.
