Have removed the engine tray as want to clean it up, glad I removed it, it had 30 years of gunk and who knows what on it.

I'm going to put it back as its not rusted through and it serves a purpose ?!?! ,has anyone left it off for any advantages reason other than easy access to the engine from below.

Thanks in advance

Hi:

You will notice from my address that the roads I travel are not the roads you travel... however... when when I drove a T2 I once tried a dirt road up Mount Elgon which divides Kenya and Uganda. I had heard a friend had done it years before in the same vehicle. I stopped as the rains threatened, its not a place to be caught in the rain. Turned, got stuck in the mud and took hours to get out. Anyway, to your question. I hadn't sealed off the base properly and got dirt in the generator and a few days later ended up having to drive in the African night with t'mrs holding a flash light outside the side watching for the edge of the road.

If you drive places similar to these. Keep it on! On an air cooled engine, all the tin is needed. On a British tarmac road with a diesel engine, I would wonder the same as you. On the other hand, if you forget a tool in the engine bay it keeps it for you till you go look for it. Apart from that?

Regards,

Dubwana

(Sorry for the story, I couldn't resist boring someone!)

Dubwana - good story!

Sternal - VW put it there to reduce noise and to protect things.

I have just bought an under tray (yes I have actually spent my hard earned cash buying one) and am currently in the process of renovating it. I am told that there are sound deadening properties if the insulation is still on the tray, but also that it was designed in such a way to draw air in to cool the engine. I know that a lot remove and never put back but as I said in my post (link below), if VW spent the time and effort to develop the tray it must serve a purpose in some way shape or form :?
