just fitted a newish turbo to my aaz ( looks low mileage anyway seller seemed pretty honest) however very smoky when revving every few secs and oil is leaking from the downpipe to turbo flange and the next flange down . i altered the centre to line up the oil feed but tightened it all up before fitting.. is it knackered or is it fixable?

Took off the downpipe and found a lot of oil in and around outlet. maybe I moved/broke a seal when I altered alighnment?

Your oil drain looks to be along way off 6 oclock position. There are no seals that could be damaged re-indexing the turbo in fact there are no actual oil seals in a turbo they rely on the drain functioning correctly.

I know the drain should be 6 oclock but the oil feed pipe is fixed as it was in the golf which was vertical then I guess but I ran the previous turbo for 35k or so with no problems . I could re index it and use a flexi oil feed pipe not sure where I can get one from though

Get a flexi feed made up at your local hydraulic hose place you will probably need them to sort out the drain aswell. If you strip your old turbo you will see what i mean about the oil seals.
Because the oil return enters the sump below the oil level any excess crank case presssure will cause the oil bo back up and cause this so it might be worth checking the breathers as well but i would sort the indexing issues first.
