got a squeaky alternator, ok under load engine sounds fine, had a look and definitely noise coming from alternator.
Is alternator on its way out or ??? Any advice appreciated

Could still be belt. To be absolutely sure, get a short length of hose, put one end to your ear and you should be able to pinpoint exactly, with the other end, where the noise emanates from. Alternators normally exhibit bearing rumble rather than a squeak.
