Noticed belt was slack on my 2.0 ac , the bolt that holds the altenator tention was loose I now cant get a bolt to wind in as the threads are stripped. Helicoil or retap and use wider bolt?

Not too sure what an Aircooled engine alternator is like but could you just use a longer bolt and put a nut on it?
If so might be an easy option for you.

Its not the bolt thats the prob , it screws. Into a captive nut

Ok
I reckon then what you say about drilling and tapping to the next size up is logical

If you use the next size up, you may have to file out the slot on the attention arm. Would be easier to helical - stronger too.
