Fuel Pump, electrical, 1983 Aircooled

At some point, the original mechanical fuel pump has been removed and replaced with an electrical fuel pump, which is housed in the engine compartment. I haven't done much mileage since I bought the van a year ago and my brother and I reconditioned the engine. My query is, as we are driving along, the vehicle seems to be starved of fuel and stops dead. I get out, take off the mattress and the cover over the engine, give the pump a bang with a spanner and it starts again and get me the couple of miles back home. Does anyone know, is this a replacement job or can you get them reconditioned?

Buy a new Facet pump (about £30 on ebay) and replace the fuel line. You want the low pressure pump (1.5-4.0 PSI). No point messing with the old one. The main difference is the facet goes underneath at front next to fuel tank outlet.
