petrol pump in tank

Hi there, having problems starting my 1985 T25, mechanic says it may be the fuel pump in the tank failing, does anyone know anything at all about this? cheers!!

I would say change your mechanic! Wait for the petrol guys to comment.

If you're referring to your 1.9DG then your fuel pump will be a mechanical pump mounted to the top of the engine (I've circled it in the photo below). Yours may look slightly different, but that's where it should be, and it'll have a pipe coming from the bulkhead, and another one going to the carburettor. It's possible that a previous owner has replaced this with an electric pump, which would probably be under the van, right hand side, between the fuel tank outlet and the engine bay. In that case the original mechanical one might have been removed and replaced with a blanking plate, or it might just be bypassed.
Is your van with your mechanic now? He should be able to test the pump by taking the carb feed off and checking the output when turning the engine over.

Only the LT vans had the pump in the tank.
