Found the source of the petrol smell at last...

...and eeeeeeeeeeeep, it could have been pretty nasty. The previous person who changed the lines neglected to use a grommet in the bulkhead for the return line and the metal edge must have cut through the pipe.
I can happily report that with new lines (and grommets) installed, the smell of petrol has gone and all seems well with the world
