As I understand it, it's the petrol pump nozzle that senses when the tank is full, nothing to do with the van. Maybe hold the nozzle at a different angle will solve the problem!

Do you mean petrol overflows through the filler pipe?
OR
Does petrol pi$$ out under the van?
In which case the tank may be rusted and need replacing or if you are lucky the pipework may be rotten.
Have a look in the Wiki.

If the breather tank pipes are gone or rotten then you wlil get petrol underneath the van when filling up to full.

Its coming out the filler cap when nozzles in tank, not from bottom

I thought there was some sort of mechanism in fuel cap to stop this happening, lesson learned so will watch out next fill

Blocked breather pipe to the neck can cause that. Mine did that when mine was blocked. Compressed air down it didn't help as mine was caused by wvo clogging it but a petrol one should be easy to clear unless it has a kink in it for some reason. Just pull the end off on the underside of the filler neck and blow down it to see if it is clear and check that the spigot that it goes on is clear.
What happens is the air that is displaced by fuel cannot exit via the blocked breather so has to bubble up through the fuel which lifts the fuel in the neck leading to solid farts. Can be overcome by very slow filling but that is tedious.
