I have a 1z 1.9tdi engine in my syncro - servicing it this week - but I'm real confused on what oil to use and whether to use fully synthetic
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Buy a manual for the car that the engine came from and you can't go wrong with anything then.
As it happens I have one right here in my hands.
Turbodiesel:
Multigrade diesel oil to vw spec 505 00 (viscosity between 5w-30 and 20w-50) synthetic is OK.

i tend to use 5-40 in my tdi, but have used (and i am at the moment) 10-40. As said above, as long as it meets the vw specs your fine

It's not a fussy engine...avoid the £2.99 a gallon stuff but any decent turbo diesel oil will do...I use 5/30 as it is thin and thin is good for mpg.
