I feel a bit embarrassed to ask this but I have read so many posts my head is spinning, when you drill the panel you are going to spot weld do you go right through the metal underneath or just to the surface? I have honestly looked through so many posts I think I must have either missed it or it so obvious I am going to look stupid

Are you talking about puddle welding where you fasten two panels together by drilling a hole in the topmost panel then clamp them together, fill in the hole again with weld then grind flat?

Then you only drill a hole in the uppermost panel. They need to then be 'clamped' firmly before filling the hole with weld, plenty of it to ensure that it has penetrated the lower panel sufficiently to give a strong weld.

but it also depends on the part your going to weld, sometimes you drill through both old and part to be retained ,othertimes spot bit on ONE of them. pickies please or more specific info
