Wooden box for rock n roll bed dilemma

This box as much as its useful for storing things in it makes up the height for the RnR bed easily rectified by using the same height foam instead of the box.
My choices are the foam base this would mean having two bits of foam no problem or somehow lowering the hinges so you didn't need the extra height for the bed (like the westfalia only has one foam bit) I don't think lowering the hinges is an option so thats out .
The reason I want to change this box is because its so heavy and hard to get out for when you want to check engine etc.
So apart from the foam option what lightweight options have I got to get the extra height ?
The space I will loose I can maybe make up with a roof box though I'm not sure I want a ruddy great box on the roof !
Any help would be greatly appreciated
For what its worth the RnR bed has the same hinges/set up as the westfalia but made by Reimo

Can you not cut a section out of the bottom of the box . Use slide out drawers , remove drawers ( oop err missus) lift lid , then remove engine cover .

Like he says, why not just have a cut-out in the bottom panel? Much too useful to get rid of....

In a word tried that and its a NO as there is a rear cupboard that over hangs and you cant get the height to open the hatch...also the front of the box sits on the front of the cover but will give it another go...
Thanks for help

There must be a way to modify it without loosing the storage , I'd love something like that to put all my tools and "pooh" in .

How often do you open the lid to look in the engine compartment - once or twice a year? That's mainly for your garage to do to carry out a service. Keep this useful storage. I wish I had the space to have one of those.

I did it this way.
A big slide out drawer and the top also slides out.

Re: Wooden box for rock n roll bed dilemma SOLVED !

Solved !
I cut a section out of the box as seen, to get to engine bay move box forward a few centimetres and then its not sitting on the cover at the front, with the side bit cut out this enables the cover to be lifted theres not much room to play with but it works and I get to keep the valuable storage space.
