Hi there
I have a 2litre Aircooled van and its pouring white smoke out the exhaust when running. Seems to drive ok apart from occasional backfire. Had a check over weekend and compressions are between 9 and 12 so they seem ok. Timing and valves settings spot on. It starts ok too. Can anyone tell me what problem may be..please, thanks in advance.

Has it been sitting a while? could water have got into the exhaust? Have you taken it for a good drive, or just a short run?
Cheers,
Sam.

Is it smoke or steam? Remember exhaust is hot. The air is cold and at this time of year full of moisture so you get steam. If it is smoke it may be you are running to week on your carb setting. (I think?)

or a drop of diesel in the tank!!!
was it "smoking" after the 40 mile run? was it a chilly day?

If it goes OK, keep driving it, in winter a good long run each week, an hour or more... if it doesn't what are the symptons. Where did you fuel up last? Fuel up somewhere else..

Hi again thanks
motor now seems to be running on three or missing...sparks to all 4...leads ok.new dizzy cap...valve settings ok...timing ok...fuel not flooding...stock refurb carbs set correct..lack of power under load now also....oil level ok...still smoking....would valve seals cause his problem...if all seems ok...

I don't think flat fours have valve seals but I think White/grey smoke is oil not burning but vapourizing

.I actually meant leaking valve
guides...well it was running on 2 cylinders because one of linkages popped off right carb...So its back to running with power...but still smoking like h*ll..so anymore for anymore?...

My 1.9DG had a similar problem and it turned out to be the oil scraper ring had broken. Compression was still good cause the compression rings were ok but tons of oil was finding its way into the cylinders. How's your oil consumption?

Whats it smell like
could be a cracked piston more likely a siezed /busted ring or rings.
I think oil/fuel is being forced into the exhaust manifold.
slightly obscure but the way display aircraft produce white smoke is to inject fuel into the exhaust manifold where it vapourises
