Auto selector lights staying on..

Hi
Does anyone please have an auto? I've finally got round to fixing my gear selector lights (I used heater display Leds which are too thin but found the two plastic caps that protect a replacement metal fuel filter are perfectly sized to hold the bulbs and allow a little adjustment).

My questions are:

Should the gear selector light only comes on when the main light switch is activated?

Bentley says the earth is on the left front crossmember. I haven't grovelled about in the dirt to find that yet. Would a bad earth cause the lights to be on all the time or should I be looking somewhere else?

Many thanks.

Hi, I have an auto and this confused me, my display only works when the ignition is on and doesn't come on just with the lights are on. I thought my new bulbs weren't working when I put them in and switched my lights on, it was only when I put the ignition on did they come on.
Don't know if mine is right but it works

Logic would suggest ignition on and sidelights on but no idea how VW wired it.

Yep, just as good. There you have it - connect light to sidelight circuit.

Mine come on with ignition not lights, The wiring is original as far as the lights which are now a strip of 6 leds. Much better light!!!
