Symptoms, from cold very chuggy when idling for first minute or so and smokey ,tickle on acc pedal and it clears and idles as it should.
Is this symptoms of broken choke pulldown unit ?
I have sucked and blown through the vac pipe and nothing happens it dosnt move the butterfly in the carb ....should it ?

The choke pull down tube has a tiny restrictor in it (beware replacements often don't so you needcto keep tube)
So borrow a tube from the dizzy and fix to pulldown temporarily
Don't look at the chokes look at the plunger on the pulldown and see if it moves

Sucking on the pipe to the pull down will tell you if the unit is busted.
if you can suck air all the time, and it doesn't hold a vacuum, then it is.
if you can't .. it isn't
A better test is to cold start the engine with the ducting off. Set the cold start by pressing the acc. pedal once, before you turn the key with your foot OFF the acc pedal.
when you press the acc. the flap should open slightly and slowly each time, until the choke is off ie the flap is fully open. (6-8 mins)

It's pretty hard to blow and suck through the restrictor without any thing conected, not everybody has the lungs for it.
swap the pipe makes it clear.

Also if somebody swapped the pulldown and the restrictor is missing I don't think it works properly

Once I've set the acc pedal and it's on top step of cam should there be a 3mm gap on the butterfly flap or should it be completely closed

The Haynes explains how to set the gao
The cam is the fast idle mechanism which is connected to the throttle butterfly valve, the choke flap is operated by the bi metal spring in the housing.
Depressing the acc pedal allows the flap and fast idle cam to set themselves before starting

Kev I understand that but ..... Once set and before ignition is turned should there be a 3mm gap on butterfly flap or should it be closed ......mine is closed but once running will eventually open

3mm gap when choke set, never closed, it needs some air

Mine as no gap at all so could that be a fault with pulldown unit or something else

If you cannot adjust the gap as per the haynes then the pull down is shagged

So you tried to adjust the gap then?

Kev I don't know if this is right or not now but was under the impression this is how you go about checking if the flap is set correctly........press acc pedal to set high cam setting , flap closed no gap , push in flap adjuster screw (towards pulldown unit) at back of carb as far as it will go and measure the gap on flap which should be 3mm with the screw pushed towards pulldown unit. Does that make sense ?
That is how I measured mine and with the adjuster screw pushed forward it does have 3mm gap but with screw released no gap
