If it is running along nicely (although a little smokey) then just cutting out it may be the stop solenoid on top of the injector pump, maybe a poor connection , loose wire??

i had the same on my girlfriends golf 16td turned out be a blockage in the pickup in the fuel tank it would idle all day hot or cold, coldstart ok as soon as you drove it for more than 500yrds it cut out give it a few seconds for the vacuum from the injection pump to suck fuel from the tank again and it would run fine again till you started driving again my sugestion to you would be remove engine lid buy a few meters of fuel hose disconect the supply line to the fuel filter and the return from the injection pump and pipe these in to a petrol can full of diesel get some one in the back to hold the can for you while you go for a drive round this will rule out the fuel tank and lines if this doesnt work the the next thing to try is a replacement injection pump hope this helps

if you are changing the fuel lines then change the fuel filter too

disconnect the hoses from the tank and drain of some of the contents into a jar and check for water also give you an idea how clean the tank is if you get bits of rust dirt it might be worth biting the bullet removeing the tank and give it a good clean. if you do find dirt don't forget to blow all the fuel lines as well.
