Water pump belt

Hello all.

First of all, I’ve had a stroke, so I’m sorry about my strange grammar.

The problem is that my 1.6 diesel water pump belt squeals. Checking the belt it had quite a lot of play. I tried to adjust the pulleys, with no shims, but can’t adjust it enough. So I bought a new one (JustKampers) 10x650, but still can’t adjust it. I’ve had a look at the crank pulley and the double pulley ion the water pump, but it looks OK. Having look at the Brickwork’s item, it measures 10x643.

1 – do you think that the 7mm smaller belt will do it? If so, and the JK is wrong, why do JustKampers still sell them?
2 – could it be something else?

I’ve just ordered the Brickwerks belt. Fingers crossed.

Again, sorry about my dodgy grammar.

Reg

I'm no expert, but my mate has a 1.6 TD diesel and said even the garage had a job getting the right fit with a number of belts and shims until they got it right.

Thanks mate, no wonder it’s difficult to fit when two specialist companies have 7mm differs! VW Heritage also have 10x643.

Been through this one several times, GSF list about 3 I can't remember which was the correct one but when I found it I went back and got another for a spare, I think you will be ok with the Brickwerks one though. :ok

I have used a piece of rope for years when the belt length isn't known - find an odd piece that will sit at the same depth as the old belt et voila you have the belt length. Easy enough on this type of setup that we have. Usually a 10mm diameter piece of polypropylene is good enough for 9.5mm and 10mm belts.
We all know that what should fit our vans doesn't after 25 yrs or more of tinkering by numerous owners.

643 is correct. I have a box full of 650s here that have been sold to me by people who tell me they're OK, and none fitted.

The problem is that there's so little adjustment using the shims that the belt length has to be spot on.
