Hi all,
Has anyone go a link to pics of starter motor removal and starter bush replacing? I have a 2.0l air cooled on which I think I need to replace the bush. However I haven't got oily for about twenty years so this will be the first (of many I'm sure!) jobs which I need to tackle. I'm hopping that pictures will make it slightly less scary.
I'm a bit nervous but have to start somewhere!

Problem with your question is that you can barely see the bush at all with your eyes as it so tucked up out of the way, so taking a picture of it would need a special camera. When I had to do mine I used the "bash it to bits with a sharp "hammerable" screwdriver" technique. Hard to get a swing on the hammer though, not much space and lying on your back It eventually worked though

If I had to do it again, I would try the rawlbolt method.

p.s. Don't forget to soak the new one in oil at least overnight.

Once starter out stick a rag in the hole to stop you dropping tools or bits into the bellhousing.

Highlighted same pic for reference although with engine & gearbox in place you won't see that. You need to disconnect battery, remove starter, shove a rag in the bottom of the hole now evident (so you don't lose either old or new bush), and use something like an expanding bolt to grip the inside of the bush so you can work it out. You'll be working somewhat blindly due to the angle you have to work in.
