1.9 Watercooled Westy, there seems to be strong fumes smell on tickover its not smoking and does not use any oil its very quite and smooth

I had the CO checked I thought it might be over-fueling, it was reading 6

adjusted the screw and got it down to 3 but was still smelling its done 178000 kilometres I thought it might be rings but that would make it smell oily???? could the carb be leaking would this cause it? any ideas??
I have a feeling a rebuild may be on the horizon

Hi I had the same problem but only on a full tank. I think the reason was the fact that on the top of the fuel tank is some chanels that love to collect water and rot, so when I top up to the max I got a slight fuel leek fom some very small hole. And it gave off a fuel pong.

--If its petrol fumes from the engine compartment change your rubber fuel lines now---are they the cloth braided type?--the rubber rots under the cloth--& leaks when engine is running--------------causing yore van to be gutted by fire--

Not from compartment but from exhaust

If its over rich Kev can you adjust that on the carb?

Needs going on a Co checking device (MOT computer) and then adjusting so it will pass the MOT and the correct reading is obtained. If it won`t adjust down low enough then you have got some other problem that is causing it, either air-filter is duff or carb is worn out

Had it co'd westy and its set at 3 I think carb might be worn
But, I think I will be going golf tdi conversion after crimbo

Have you checked thea the choke is coming off fully?
It would be strange that the smell should suddenly start...
Also a leaky carb could cause this, a rebuild kit is cheap from VW and even cheaper from GSF..
CO should be about 1-1.5 IIRC my syncro doka is running about 0.6 which is a little too lean in this colder weather...

Good luck with that mate. Have a good read of what Baxter has to say over on the Brickyard, it`s the gearbox that is the failing with a lot of conversions, modern diesels don`t rev like the old ones, they make most of their power lower down the scale, so if you are geared for 3500 revs at 70mph, you don`t make the most of what`s available from them, as they are running out of steam by then. My modern HDI (90BHP) car will do 80mph at around 2500.
Gearbox ratio swaps are expensive as well, though you are starting with a petrol `box, you need to see which type it is, I think it`s the AAP `box that has the best compromise on gearing

Passat and Golf I think, maybe some Seats etc. The AAZ is the last Td motor before electronic control, could be up to 1994 ish I think? Have a look in alternative engines list, Phillipacman seems to be localsih to us, and has a good rep. for doing the conversion. I would PM him and ask him some leading questions

Cost, who gets the parts etc. you are going to need the diesel parts, as you are petrol engine at the moment.
Just had a though, if you`re air-cooled at present, you may have probs with a radiator fitting

Jig-saw, long pipes etc etc comes to mind
