Broken dipstick, probably in the engine oil!!

Hi all,

When completing my CVR Test (MOT) pre-checks, I was checking the engine oil and the bottom 3-4cm of the dipstick broke off...typical when the vans test is on Thursday :x

Anyway, a similar issue in this thread https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... k#p7982522 where the owner managed to get the broken piece out with a magnet, I've had no such luck.

I've tried:
- a magnet to try and remove part from dipstick tube
- removed dipstick tube and confirmed no broken piece inside
- no sign of broken piece surrounding the dipstick tube

Unfortunately my broken piece is almost certain to have gone into the oil. Number one is to try and sort a replacement dipstick from a local parts supplier (closed today due to bank holiday).

So, what is the risk??

1. To those familiar with the innards of the engine, where would the broken piece most like fall?
2. Is the broken piece safe here in the short term?
3. What are the chances that the broken piece could migrate to a critical part of the engine
4. Best way to retrieve broken piece? Is it possible to leave there until next oil change?

Any help appreciated, going back out to check the rest of the van, the roof will probably fall off!!!!

It's heavy enough to write off, imo
Just get a new stick.

Cheers kev,

While I've no problem leaving it where it is if it won't cause problems, it'd be nice to get out at some stage for piece of mind.

Any idea where to source a replacement if I can't get one locally, although luckily enough there's just enough of the dipstick left to touch the top of the oil!

It may have attached itself to the magnet on the sump plug or may do over time. There is a couple of T3's breaking on DoneDeal. They may be of use to you if you need one urgent.

Get one from Brickwerks £5 cheaper than elsewhere and you can always trust them. Always check them out first!
:ok

Cheers all, the more I think about it any broken piece would drop into the sump and would have to get through the filter to get near any moving parts...I'm assuming there'd be some sort of cover/mesh over the sump as well (no expert here).

I'll check those out getting a replacement, probably wont have it in time for test...we'll see how it goes!
