Hi All,

I have the chance of a petrol gearbox with a hydraulic operated clutch - I think it's a DH but not sure.

I want to replace my 5 speed cable operated diesel gearbox with it so its lower geared ( have a 1.9d engine now instead of a 1.7d) -

Question is......is it easy to convert to cable using the bits off my diesel gearbox - I have to change the bellhousing and fork anyway ?

clutchwise if you are swapping bellhousing then clutch operation stays the same
DH is iirc 4 speed for 1.6 petrol will be rubbish as 5.43 final drive same as original 1.6 NA diesel you want a 4.83 or 4.57 final drive box, codes are on Brickwerks tech info

Thanks for your reply - I will steer away from it as there's no benefit for me.

One quick question, is it within the capabilities our your average home mechanic to change the final drive as the 1.7d 5 speed box I have is in good condition or are special tools needed ?

My understanding is that it's the kind of job that most people on here, even the more technically inclined, tend to get a specialist like Aidan to do for them.
