It's not illegal to have a pressed metal plate on, as long as it is in uk font , uk spaced and not in German style( like a lot of dubs have) or any non GB style for that matter. :ok

And it needs to be british standard marked and have makers details on

I used http://www.dubmeister.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and was very happy.

Often wondered thus, why are the number plate surrounds such intricate designs? Lots and lots of non regular cut-outs in them, what's the reason for that?

The confusion comes about because it is illegal to fit number plates that don't met current regulations, but not illegal to have number plates on a vehicle which were legal at time of fitting, even if (for example) they don't have suppliers details. Whether it is legal to sell "show plates" is another matter.

Hello,

Pity Google never returns this

https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... r-vehicles" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's is the absolute definitive word, as used by the courts, prosecutors and the Police.

My MOT tester also fine with mine and he's on the VOSA council which sets MOT's.

But an MOT is mostly a safety test

Hi,
Don't make the mistake of thinking because your vehicle has just passed its MOT that everything is legal.
It most definitely doesn't mean that, an MOT is a check of a few dozen basic road worthiness standards.
The number plate is checked to see if it's damaged NOT to see if it comply with the legal standard, your light bulbs are checked to see they work not that they comply with the legal standard.

If we want the MOT to check legality it would be similar to the TUV and cost way way more.

Cheers

Si

My local tester was going to fail mine because the number plate securing screw covers were chrome not black, & one of them partially broke into a letter. He told me I had to swop it or paint it black to make it legal & pass the MOT.

ok undamaged and readable, My point is the MOT does not check that it complied with the legal standard BSAU 145d.
they tried to introduce it years a go and the garages fought it tooth and nail.

I was under the impression that the pressed "back and white" plates were for pre 1973 vehicles only?

As this question/topic seems to regularly comes up, is it worth downloading the pdf on the link above and stick it in the wiki or the dowloads page?
