I would consider changing the pressure switch first

Don't discount any sort of overheating problem, (partially blocked radiator/pipework etc ) more so if the van hasn't been used on a decent run for a period of time.

So what is the fix then I hear you ask ? well you either check/sort of the cooling problem (if there is one) OR fit an oil cooler,,,,

Just a suggestion before you go spending money on oil switches etc ,,etc

PS, an oil+ filter change can sort out this type fault for less than a tenner,,

Anyway 16000 later I am still ignoring it. I did have a plan to fit an oil pressure guage to each sensor point and have bought them, so far have been thwarted by the length of the guage pipes and a general lethargy towards the whole problem, meanwhile I am saving for a new engine!

You only need to fit it to one, at the HP take-off, and to be honest, you don't need to run it to the cab;
just note it at cold-idle and 2000 rpm.
then get it hot, and when the buzzer's coming on, park up and go and check the gauge again at idle and 2000 rpm..

My guess is it'll show less than the figures required for the engine. about 0.3 bar at idle hot and .9~1.0 bar above 2000 rpm

I'd take a low pressure warning more seriously on a petrol WBX than the diesels, and think it's at least 50% likely that its not the senders or tacho/dash wiring. Even if it is low oil pressure, as above example then engine could go on for miles, or not, depending on how its driven - though a 2.1 with low pressure is probably the worst.

If the rpm at which the high-speed warning comes on (e.g. rpm required to get it shut up) increases as the engine gets hotter, its likely it IS oil pressure. If it just buzzes when coming down through 2000 or when braking/cornering slowing up then I'd

Forgive me if i'm wrong but i seem to recall reading somewhere that the later genuine vw low oil pressure switch was modified/reduced to 0.25 bar to stop the low pressure warning system alarming/making the oil light flash.My oil light flickers on and off at idle when hot so i might try a genuine one,at the moment i've just turned the tickover up a little bit.

I was pinting you at the higher (use at higher speeds) one (dep down near the pump), the other is out at the heads, so a bit less importnat IMHO..

I've had those symptons on a diesel, shopuld coem out at even higher speed in summer on a run if its pressure
