Hi All,

I'm after some advice.

I have a 1988 T25 1.9d with a 5 speed gearbox - not sure of the gearbox code, but it revs it's nuts off at 60 mph so I'm guessing it's a low geared unit. It was originally a 1.7d from Germany.

I'm presently reconditioning the 1.9d engine and would like to maybe put a higher geared petrol box in so as its a bit more comfortable on long trips.
My question is :

1. What bits from the diesel gearbox do I need to transfer to the petrol one.

2. Am I better going for a 5 speed petrol to match the existing gear linkage

3. Is there a particularly strong reliable gearbox in the petrol range

1 the slave cylinder bracket support strut, the input shaft and the bellhousing with slave cylinder bracket and clutch fork lever arm
2 yes the TD prefers a 5 speed keeps the turbo spooled up as closer ratios
3 post september 1989 they had the late 4th5th synchrohub with radiused corner cutouts; strongest is recently rebuilt right;
pre mid 85 some interesting ratios but skinny teeth on 4th and 5th ok if driven with moderation, if you drive like you stole it go late, as late as possible is always good there were made upto early 2000s and are a very few codes are still sat on the shelf in classic parts in Germany and elsewhere

Thanks very much - I suppose the other route would be to fit longer cogs to my
existing 5 speed diesel but I've heard those Albins gear sets are expensive.
My 1.9d is normally aspirated not turbo - do u reckon it will still be ok ?
(Although my engine has oil sprayers and could be turboed ?..? )

May keep an eye out for a later 5 speed petrol

It's not just oil sprayers that determine whether you can go turbo or not. Engines not intended for turbos are made of alloys which withstand lower temperatures. The block will have either 1.9D or 1.9D/TD cast in the side under the exhaust manifold. My understanding is, if it says 1.9D it's not suitable for turbo.
