Gearbox and Exhaust question for AAZ or 1Y engine conversion

Hi Guys,

I have a 1.7d at the moment (think thats the KY) and due to constant problems i am looking to upgrade to either the 1Y engine which seems to be the easiest option, or the AAZ turbo diesel which seems to be the best all rounder.

After trawling forums and guides though i'm still confused on whether i will need to completely change the gearbox (i currently have a 4 speed) or exhaust for either of these engines. Some people are saying no for both, some are saying yes for both, some are saying yes for the aaz but not 1y etc. Just wandering if anyone could give me some clarification.

Much appreciated, :D

I changed my 1.6d CS to the 1y and kept the same exhaust and gearbox.

Perfect. Was looking for as easy job as possible really as only changing due to necessity and have already seen a few MK3 golf's with a 1y in.

Was it a pretty easy job?

Like keytouch I kept the same gearbox and exhaust, when changing to an AEF. It was OK, but later on I did change to a longer 4th gear to drop the cruising revs a bit. An AAZ would struggle though I think.

Make sure you make a good job of soundproofing the intake air tract, or your engine will sound as though it's revving its nuts off all the time. If it's buzzing away quietly, you don't notice it. That generally means using your existing inlet manifold, filter, snorkel and all the associated bits.
