Getting into my rear tailgate

Hi all,

I hope you are well. I have a multivan with central locking, but the central locking has not worked for some years now. My van has just been repainted and had a new rear tailgate rubber seal fitted. When i got the van home I went to check the boot was locked as i usually do, but i found it wasn't.

Prior to getting van painted, to open the boot i had to put the key in the lock, turn 15-20 degrees clockwise and push the lock in...this would pop opent the lock. When i got it back, the boot was opening freely by just pushing the lock in, then if i shut it the tailgate would not be locked (which it used to). Anyway after taking some advice i slammed it shut (as got told it could be the new rubber...which incidentally seems to have the tailgate sitting slightly proud. This seemed to lock the tailgate, however now...when i push the lock in nothing happens, if i turn the key in the barrel it feels like there is no resistance etc. I have tried pushing the tailgate in etc...but no joy.

Could someone please talk me through what is best to do next. Do i need to climb in the boot and pop off the tailgate door card....then what?

Any advice appreciated...also does this sound like a need a new lock, or is this related to the central locking?

Thanks

Marcus

It sounds like the central locking mechanism has moved.
Normally the CL can be in one of two positions, but if the actuator isnt working the slider can get stuck between the two.
Normally if the CL is in locked, turning the key 45 degrees clockwise and pressing the button opens the tailgate.
If the Cl is working the lock barrel can be left horizontal and simply pressing the button opens the tailgate.

Pull the trim off the inside of the tailgate and have a look at the mechanism, try moving the slider.
