The bearings have gone in the alternator and it's making a hell of a racket.
I purchased a replacement from GSF and it only gives full charge at about 2000 rpm where as the previous one turned the charging light off as soon as the accelerator pedal was touched.
I had the same problem when trying to replace the regulator.
and ended up having to pay £30 for that from VW. I dread to think how much a replacement alternator would be from them.
Any ideas.....
The wires are attached via a plug and not thread and bolt.
It's a 1983 1.6d n/a , and all the identification(maker and part Number) have worn away.

Try going to a Bosch autoelectrical supplier should be a good compromise--

Get it back to GSF and let them check it out.

I think the early diesles have a different type of alternator as when I was trying to replace the regulator I had exactly the same problem.
I tried two of them from GSF and one from JK's all theree did the same and only turned the charging llight out at higher than normal revs which becomes almost thrashing it when the fridge is on 12v
I had to get it from vw in the end and they said there are two types, which I thought only meant regulator but am now thinking the alternators are different.

You could try having new bearings put in your old one should cost about £30 but your are off the road for a few days.

Just phoned VW and it's one of two.
One is about £120.00 and the other is £199.00 and thats without the surcharge.
