Leaky injector

Been checking over the van the last week in preparation for the annual ITV (MOT over here)
Only thing seen was as light weep of oil from the filter housing, easily manageable and on the list of things to do next service.
So the day arrived and SWMBO and I headed down the motorway for a quick 20 min drive to the local station, noticed a bit of smoke after an overrun, put that down to not being used for a while but not unduly worrying as there was none while driving normally, engine nice and warm and as usual struggled a bit on the inclines.....
Anyway, get the turn off and we both noticed a strong smell of diesel, parked up and had a look, the back of the van was spotted nicely and there was a drip or two falling off the sump onto the ground!
Quickly whipped off the engine cover and could see straight away #2 injector was leaking!
Dried it off and tried to see if it was the leak off pipes but they appeared to be OK......
Couldn't do much there as I was exactly on time for my apointment, paperwork duly scrutinised and fee paid, very soon, number came up on the board and duly went through the lane...... no advisories at all, although the young lassie took a good long look at one of my tyres (which are all very old) and all she said was "keep an eye on it"
It was in my plan to get new rubber anyway so that just pushed it forward a bit (have since got 4 new tyres).
Anyhoo, my question is, will a leaky injector cause the smoke problem.
I did try to make it leak again when I got back home but it seems to be only when the engine is under load as I couldn't see any leakage when idle or revving to 3k and over.
Are these injectors quite robust? Are they easy to remove, service and replace? Or should I leave it to a specialist?
