Help with Upgrading my gearbox

Hi All,

I'm rebuilding my 1.9d engine to put back into my t25 for the summer.
It was originally a 1.7d with a 5 speed gearbox, but I'm maybe thinking of replacing the gearbox for a longer legged petrol one. There's a good DK for sale I could get hold of.

Any suggestions with respect to choice of gearbox ? I'm also running 16" wheels
I presume I will have to use the diesel bellhousing - do I have an issue with length of the petrol gearbox ?

Any help greatly appreciated

Ta
Steve

This chart is a good guide to gear ratios of standard t3 boxes:-

http://rjes.com/html/gearbox_types.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Look at the "final drive" column - smaller number means lower revs.

You say 16 inch wheels, but what profile are the tyres? If they are low profile tyres you may find that you have a smaller diameter than standard - to check that, use the calculator near the bottom of this page:-

http://www.etyres.co.uk/tyre-size-calculator/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

standard is 185 80 14 (652mm diameter)

Yes you would use the diesel bellhousing, and I think it is only the gearing that is different between petrol and diesel boxes, not external length/ case size (someone will be along to correct me if not)?

If you find a box, probably best to check on here for suitability before buying!
