Sometime van starts first time, sometimes it just clicks and starter motor doesn't turn but then might after a few goes. I have checked that the starter spade connection on the solenoid is clean and tight. What would be the next things to check please?

Use the search feature. This has been covered so many times. Ignition switch contacts could be going, so could brushes in motor.
