Hi I have t25 1982 air cooled . I have had nothing but engine problems first vager sold me a recon pup . They had it back it and returned the engine after 6 days it had a different set of heads on it old recons by the look of it . I hope it is still a lead free engine and I have not been turned over again . Since then I have hade the carbs rebuilt cost £220 . I have a lack of top end power, hills how ever slit the gradient have me going down the gears almost before I get to them . Like I am not getting full throttle . The carbs have been balanced to the best of my ability . But I have found a small amount of play in the butterfly shaft that might draw in some air . The timing has been adjusted many times distributer replaced 3 times and all over components coil ecu and anything ells under the hood . Leading me back to the carbs . I will not let this beat me . I would like to stay with the original type of carb as I know the van can perform a lot better than it does . It has been to a vw expert in hemelhemsted who agrees it lacks power at least 10 mph down on other vans he has driven . He had it for a week replaced the dissy timed it . It got vandalised while in his care so now I have different key for every lock / great / . I need to borrow or bye some good working 34 carbs for a day too see if this improves the performance . This is 10 years now on and off and would like to get to the bottom of it . Can you build an engine and time up the gears 1 tooth out and would it still tick over or run at all . Any response to this can of worms would be gratefully received . Many thanks for reading this longwinded post .Steve .

I think to get to the bottom of this, thats where you'll need to start - at the bottom. Regardless of its history, I think you'd do well to do a compression check and see what all four cylinders read. If they actually check out ok, you can start working your way up until you find the problem.
