Gearbox Relay Lever

How tight should the ball be in the cup be? I have a new relay lever and receiving cup to fit but it seems incredibly tight to me and I'm also having a hell of a job getting the new relay lever boot over the ball, the receiving cup is a BW one the relay lever and the boot are from heritage, SSP ones I think.
Have I made the classic mistake of not getting BW ones or is the ball usually this tight? I can't see how the gear change would be nice and positive if fitted like this :(

Boot can be tight but the ball should not be that tight in the cup, is there any moulding flashing that may need trimming off?
have you greased it?

Ok, even after some trimming of the moulding flashing last night it still didn't fit. so I asked on the yard and after checking this morning it seems the one I've been sold (NOT by Brickwerks) fits old worn cups but is useless for nice new shiny ones
