Non t25 brake question !

The wifes car has started making a sort of loud screechy sort of sound when reversing for the 1st time that day( doesn't happen every day) like the hand brake has stuck slightly on, there after all reversing is fine that day. Having looked on a Bmw forum this seems to be very normal on the E46 something to do with being damp etc...

someone has stuck a youtube video up and its this sound but not so aggressive.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwV2rZ5B4s0#t=12" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and then typing the same problem but without any car make it comes up with the same answer.

I've never had a car make this sound before ! but apparently its normal :roll:

Have you experienced it ?

My daughter has a BMW that does a similar thing. Apparently it has a type of "hill start" hold for the hand brake so that when moving off on a hill the car does not roll backwards. When she visits us, she reverses up the drive to park but then when she leaves forwards its as if the handbrake is still on and squeals for a while, something to do with the sensors on the brakes I'm told.

I've read lots of threads on several BMW forums and its pretty normal apparently changing the rear pads may stop it !

weird cos I've owned lots of cars and never heard it before

Quick google suggests E46 handbrake is a small drum inside the disc - not an unusual design. So it's probably a build-up of corrosion and dust, maybe exacerbated by weak pull-off springs, causing the trailing shoe to catch and pull on slightly. Once celaned-up/warm, it's not doing it.

Take the disc off, give it all a good clean, maybe new shoes/springs whilst you're in there.

E46 is old enough it's unlikely to have the driver-brain-replacement electronics on the handbrake...
