I want to fit a towbar to my van for occasional trailer use but mostly to mount a sturdy bike carrier.

Can anyone recommend a towbar for a metal bumpered van?

Best one is a westy swan neck towbar, you need to cut a notch in the bumper but you can do that with a hole saw and a hacksaw, other than that it just slides in place of the bumper irons.

they come up on here regularly, one on link for £75 may still be for sale, even with post will be cheaper and better than a jk one

Or make your own if you have the welding skills. Mine is a metal bumper and all I did was remove bumper then measure between bumper irons and cut a length of scaffold-type tube to fit snugly between them. Tack in place then remove it plus irons and weld fully. On to that I welded box section and a tow ball plate set to recommended height. Mine will pull a trailer no prob (VERY VERY STRONG) and I often have a cycle rack on the tow ball. Its only when you want to start towing something really big that you need support bars that go underneath engine and bolted in on extra chassis points. Most tow bars can be adapted to suit anyway.

Mines a Witter with bolt on ball. No drilling of the body required, just a small cut out in the bumper.
