smell of fuel in the cab area

I've noticed recently, but not all the time, I get a right whiff of petrol in the cab area. It's not coming from the rear of the bus and I haven't noticed any drips below the van .. but it would evaporate anyway I suppose!.. I've read somewhere about fuel pipe deterioration any suggestions where I might start to investigate? and what pipes/tubes I could need?

Cheers
Martin

start with the breather pipes to the expansion tanks under the wheel arches, also look at the filler neck these typically perish too.

Sadly, all though those guys above are of course right, the other common cause of this is deterioration where the breather pipes go into the top of the tank or even a rusty hole in the top of the fuel tank. The only practical way to examine this is to take off the tank. Fairly easy in a warm dry workshop, up on a lift, but not so easy on a cold wet December on your driveway :(

Does it do it more just after you have filled up ?

I was recommended to never fill the tank but run half full, as the breather vents into the cab (or some such thing I can half remember). We had the fuel tank replaced (rust) new neck, new sender and still have a smell so think there might be some truth in this.

Would VW make a tank the size they did,if you were only meant to half fill it.
