Relay chatter at 40mph

Hi all. Picked up my van today :D

I have noticed that when it hit 40mph ish I start to hear what sounds to be a relay chatter from the glove box ( real fast clicking). Thought it was trim rattle but now pretty convinced it's a relay.

Any ideas at 40 mph this could be ??

Thanks

My speedo cable / speedo head makes a ticking noise above about 50mph, just for the first couple of miles from cold.

I've had this. From memory I think I replaced the offending relay but it can be caused by loose connections to and from the relay. Substitution is usually the best way to find out which one. Indicator relays can be troublesome.

It is usually the indicator relay.

If that is the problem I suggest that you unplug the indicator relay, clean the connections and put it back in. When mine played up that worked for me.

There would just be no point! time travel continuum occurs at 88mph! lol. :rofl

Strange that Delorean's headed for the states were fitted with 85mph speedo's

I will have a look at the indicator relay first then, hopefully a quick clean and that will be it. Thanks a lot guys.

On some models, particularly earlier fuseboxes, the case of the indicator relay can be very close to other parts of the dash (even touching) which not only makes the familiar 'tick tick' much louder but any vibration through the body can set the relay off. They can just wear out too...

Another thumbs up for the speedo cable.....saying that the fault happens at 40 mph sounds as though you have a rotational ' cable' clicking....a noise occurring at a particular speed is an unlikely relay fault.

Just noticed relay marked 18 (bottom row second from the left) is warm to touch. From what I have found this is the load reduction relay. Could this be the mysterious buzzing at 40mph. Some forums say that they should get slightly warm as it runs a lot through it constantly.

What do we think ?
