A speedo problem that I'm sure someone will recognise :-)

I have an old threaded speedometer, that runs from the hub.
It has never worked and I've only just got round to making it a priority.
I've replaced the clip at the hub and I've checked the cable spins at the dashboard end while driving and it rotates with force to the varying speeds as I drive.
When I connect the speedo up to the cable I can hear the cable making a friction noise like its just spinning in a worn out attachment.
Here is a picture of the back of the speedo where the cable attaches and a picture of the cable end.
Can anyone tell me if there is something missing here or if there looks like a lot of ware on any part?
Cheers
Mike

I've been thinking and I've done some looking, I can't find anything on the wiki link and I've been checking Just Kampers website and googling but no luck so far.
But could it be that Debbie (my LHD 2l Aircooled Devon conversion T25) is fitted with a RHD speedo cable.
Could this be the cause for the speedo to not work?

Personally I think the speedo hole is worn looking at your photo.
Have you tried turning the speedo by hand (with a small screwdriver perhaps) to make sure it is not seized or stuck. If it turns you may need to find a way to repair the hole or enlarge the end of the speedo cable so it doesn't rotate without turning the speedo mechanism.
( I would try a little Araldite on the metal bit of the cable end, let it dry and file it back to a square large enough to go into the speedo head but not so small it spins without turning the mechanism.)

RHD Speedo cable should still work. There will just be more of it under van to clip out the way as they are longer. As Nevill3 says try spinning the speedo with a small screwdriver - you should see a quick acceleration from 0 to 40 mph
