Fitting a deep sump

Hi guys,

Just been reading in one of the mags about how easy it us to fit a deep sump to increase oil capacity and cooler running. Has anyone fitted these to a standard Aircooled 2.0 ltr ? Just curious to hear everyone's thoughts, I'm sure vw covered it, but surely it is a good idea?

Let's hear it guys!

was always going to fit one on my 2400cc van but never did, but I have the 3.5 litre deep sump on my beetle best thing I ever fitted I read up before hand most of them you have to remove oil strainer plate screws from bottom of engine to attach external sump and weld on the extended pick up pipe and most leak , that's why I went for the gene berg as you don't need to remove them and never had a leak , probably best to ask on shop talk forum as theres more people running uprated type 4 motors on there than there is in the uk

Where did you get your 2400cc from?

So I guess you are running a normal sized sum then?

I'm not a fan of deep sumps... As for cooler running, that only really happens in wet weather, all that really happens with a deep sump, is it takes longer for the oil to heat up...

If you want to do something that'll have a real effect, then an external oil cooler through a thermo valve is the best option... I fitted this to a customer T2 bay camper, and he drove round Europe this year, and the highest temp he saw was 105°c, as he was on a steep mountain climb!! :)

I'm not a fan either. They made them for bugs too and a major drawback was ground clearance. Additional oil coolers won out in my view.

I had a 19 row cooler on my 2400cc type 4 and standard sump, i only run one o the beetle as the sump hardly holds any oil now holds 6 litres 2400cc engine was built from parts I collected over many years engine is now sold as I wanted more power

The capacity is just fine, it's the temperature you need to control....an oil cooler is the way. :ok
