Coked up turbo, but what else

So i have started taking bits off my recently aquired 1.6gtd engine and seeing what needs doing before it goes in the van :D .
first thing i noticed was the turbo was almost siezed. so it came apart last night and there was huge carbon build up behind the exhaust turbine( a solid coke washer!) and the inlet was totally drenched in oil. the inlet bush looks ok and so does the shaft but i cant get the circlip out of exhaust side to inspect bush. reassembled loosly and turbo spins freely as it should. so is it just that previous owner was 104 and never went boosting, or is there usually a deeper reason.
alsowhat else is worth checking on these engines? any usual suspects??

I fitted a cheap turbo rebuild kit on my 2.5 tdi about 150000 miles ago for the same reason (it's coke build up, Nigella) and it's still fine.

BUT, and it's a big BUT, before you strip the turbo in the first place, the positions of the impellers on the spindle and their relationship to one another must be ACCURATELY marked, and reassembled in EXACTLY the same positions, or the rotor will be out of balance, will whistle horribly, and destroy itself in a short while. The professional rebuilders have dynamic balancing equipment, so if you've lost the indexing, essential to leave it to the pros.

Sorry, I don't have a JX, [E D I T] (correction, GTd) and it's 30 years since I was in China[/E D I T] so can't help with your other questions.
