I've heard these are available. Does anyone know where? I haven't been able to find any.

Different stat though - thats the one that decides when the water really needs to circulate and is in the engine bay. You shouldn't need to lower the fan stat/switch though. They don't exist to my knowledge. It kicks in way before danger level and thats all its for. I do have a chicken switch though. Some deride them but I'd much rather have a manual overide myself. Its reassuring (more reassuring than my old friend 1664 in fact).

I do have a chicken switch and a new thermo switch but the fan just isn't kicking in when it should.

Hot wired fan and its all working fine. Radiator is getting up to temp and thermostat is all working correctly.

In the two years I've had the van the fan has never kicked in when it should.

Nothing major, just one of those things I'd like to nail.

E D I T: fitted new coolant temperature sender also. Will do the resistor trick to make sure the gauge is reading correctly also. Maybe I've just had a bad thermo switch.

I have never had my fan come on in 10 years - never overheated and everything is in good order.

I would agree to some extent......you are very unlikely to get the fan coming on during the autumn/winter months (unless you leave it idling for 20 minutes or more) However, I have found that mine is very predictable in the summer. Clicking in and out on a regular cycle if left idling after a run, typically triggering the moment the needle nudges past it's twelve O'clock position.
Mines a 2.1 Petrol (I know Diesels behave a little differently)

According to haynes the original fan switches had a lower switch temp for the 2.1 engines than the 1.9 so anyone with a 1.9 may be able to look into this. I'm not sure whether aftermarket ones differentiate?

Interesting I let her idle for about 30 mins this morning and the high speed fan kicked in with the needle 3/4 of the way up (low speed still on checkin switch). So all seems to be working as should. Lots of cycling on and off

E D I T so seems the new thermo switch is working.

Out of interested where is the earth for the fan located? With the thermo switch?

Just to confirm, my rad fan never kicks in at all this time of year either. Its just too cold out there. Even a light draught through radiator is enough to cool water. The other side of this ofcourse is that if fan kicks in more often, its lifespan would be reduced too. As for earth, its on the thermo switch.

The fan earth goes back in the loom to the earth crowns on the A post next to the fuse box.

Sounds like you need a new thermo-switch as it appears that 'low speed' isn't working allowing the temperature to rise to the 'second stage' where the high speed takes over.

Mine would dance between low and high speeds, literally back & forth every couple of seconds..cured with a new thermo-switch.

Obviously..having the low speed working will prevent the dial going so high before getting 'fan action'.

The reality is that not that many T25 owners ever get to experience 'high speed' on their fans. This is because, for the vast majority of driving, low speed fan circulation provides sufficient air movement to stop the temperature rising and reverse its direction. It is only those 'exceptional circumstances' ie: driving up a 1:8 mountain pass at 10mph for 10 minutes or more, that may generate too much heat for the low speed fan to curtail the temperature rise.
