Hi

Can anybody tell me what size socket I need for the oil pressure sender please? 2.1 water boxer.

My sockets are not big enough, I need to go buy one... Should it be a deep one?

I'm not changing the sender, just discovered a leak from the one by the water pump so need to nip it up.

access is not great

the sender hex is 24mm, the adapter between and the block is 22mm, you may need to hold that to just remove the sender

standard socket will fit but the tang of the sender will be in the square hole where the tool needs to go so it can be bit tight with a standard one trying to get the square drive just in and the socket just on the edge of the sender

Dr Heinz Wolfe was having a bad day when he decided where to mount that then.

This is where a set of cheapo box spanners comes into its own.

Always used a standard socket myself with a short extension bar or flexi joint maybe better, just dont click the bar in, there is just enough insertion to be able to turn it, and as its not clicked in you can also angle it slightly for better clearance, if it was high torque then no but it's not.
if its leaking i'd remove it ( cold so no oil is lost ) and check the copper washer is fitted and not knackered before doing it up as it should not need to be very tight, 30Nm accoding to Bentley.

Where the hell is an oil pressure sender on a WBX engine?

I only have oil pressure switches

Oh, yes it is a switch not a sender... But boy, it is in an awkward place... Managed to get it out, with skinned knuckles, and of course the 22mm adaptor came out with it, but it does at least have the copper washer on it.

Would it help to use PTFE tape on reassembly?

ptfe tape is a lubricant not a sealing agent, the copper washer does the sealing
is it perhaps the switch itself that is leaking ? they do let go and oil comes out of the plastic cover

Funny no-one has mentioned yet whether the OP was talking about the one by the water pump or the one between the pushrod tubes ? (though iirc the socket size is the same).

yep me too, oil squirting out the end of it

I have to admit I missed it too and assumed the other
socket is same though although tin is in the way at the back
