Gearbox is nearly ready, Aidan has worked it up from two lesser quality boxes I had, one was the 5:4:3 I brought back from Finland which was pretty much a write off once box was opened but thats a whole thread all on its own. New box is having longer 3rd & 4th, oiling plates new C&P. Loom from Sharan is off with Andy , decisions needing to be made, Which leaves me with the AVG 100k miles , new Midland Turbo reworked and refitted and tested before I broke the car. To start I am planning to strip and clean as thats well within my skill set other than that I need to work out how the engine is gong to be set up. The turbo will stay so that is my starting point. Gonna deal with the pumps etc tomorrow, what will I need to keep and what can go?

Bin the aircon pump, lose the water pump pulley as it needs a a non aircon one..have the part numbers if you need them..a shorter belt also..dependent on your rev counter the alt may need swapping...talk to Andy about that. PAS pump will work as it is, again a shorter belt needed there.. just re configure the pipes a little.

I have a engine sat on the bench with all this done so will get part no s for you...if you want used parts let me know.

Flywheel of the shazzer won't work...tdi golf one required..

Cheers. I have a rev diesel clock set on the shelf so will speak with Andy .... Used parts are derigeur I'm all ears Alex. Air con pump will be shelved , one or two vans around waiting for an AC modernisation makeover. Will strip the ancillaries off end of week , will I end up with specialised belts or just the shazza ones for a non ac set up ?

Stripped some ancillaries may well re fit them just to get the hang as it were. close up pic of alternator for Andy when he wanders this way. As the engine will be in a state of partial undress for a while is there anything i should be doing to it storage wise? and i have access to a steam cleaner so might well give it a going over with this....im guessing i should block up anything that involves air intake?

You could try an alloy wheel cleaner.

Or dilute the contents of a dead battery, same thing.

Jes, the Sharan harness doesn't use the 'W terminal' (DIN terminology), so your alt may be missing that physical pin. But you can add a W terminal connection by soldering a wire onto one of the stator windings. Plenty of info out there via Google..

Once you've done that, you'll have to re-calibrate your tacho to produce a sensible reading.

This is all 'in principle', I've not had to do it myself, though many others have I believe. Personally, I wouldn't bother with any of that, I'd just fit a modern dash panel.

Alex , have you got a part number for the non air con water pump pulley ? Also have binned the dual mass , need a fly wheel , and a starter adaptor ( bw, I guess ? )

I have a used pulley and golf tdi flywheel here Jes, no starter adaptors but could do with a couple myself! I use the early alternator as it has a W terminal and drives a rev counter with decent acuraccy without any mods...only 70amp those though.
