Hi Guys,

So I don't know whether its because its particuarily cold lately but when i start the van in the morning, although it starts first time it sounds like its firing wrong and i have next to no power until i knock out of gear and give it a rev for a second or so . From then on its all systems go. Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

Don't be daft, no need to apologise. The symptoms may not be the same and we'd both like solutions.

It seems identical, apart from mine i just need to blip the throttle out of gear a few times at most. But i guess yours might be an example of whats to come? Now tell me ... what have you done differently recently

I've not used it for 4 months.......nothing has been changed for quite some time.

Fair enough, Well iv been meaning to change the spark plugs for a while now (in a box in the back ov van) so will do that and see if it makes a difference.

Sounds like a choke problem to me. Too much or too little and possibly not getting on to the fast idle cam properly. This keeps the revs high on full choke. As the water warms the choke opens in stages and the fast idle drops back in stages.

If its anything like my knees first thing, you've got little to worry about. These are basically agricultural engines and like humans, don't like damp and cold. They lack the finese and heated slippers of modern engines. I normally whack the Propex on first thing when I get up and the somewhat warmer battery inside helps no end - helps me too

I did toy with the idea of warming the engine via an extra pipe but doubt it would make that much difference.

Make sure your auto choke is working properly although some engines just don't like damp/cold - period.

I tend to give the auto choke spring housing a little adjustment when the weather gets cooler, Ive marked it in two places, one for winter and one for summer,

Yep I do that too. The auto choke has only ever been a 'guesstimate' even when they're new. As they age they become more of a 'stab in the dark'. Used to do that when I had Beetles.
