Is this a cap on my LPG tank guage?

Is this a cap and does the gauge sit beneath this? I have unscrewed it off the tank and as you can see I have tried everything to get it off but although I did get it to go round a little (via the vice) but there is very little to grip (and even less now)
If it is a cap does anyone have any suggestions of what liquid I could leave it in for a few days? If it isn't a cap or I have already destroyed it somehow, does anyone know where I could get a replacement. Gunzl sell whole unit rather than just this bit?

hey lloydy - amazingly fast reply. But much better news. As soon as I posted the pics and looked at them on the website I suddenly realised that they were PAINTED black. It is so kind of obvious really. A very very soft abrasive and suddenly the gauge came into view. Down to the garage to fill her up and she immediately started to show contents!! class. But thanks for the info about where to get one in the future. appreciated.

The only reason I can think of for spraying over the the gauge like that is if the gauge doesn't read...as in permanently reading empty?
This is a very common fault and relatively easily fixed (with an empty tank)
The gauge mechanism needs removing and the float re-sealing (as fuel will have leaked past the thread into the float) use gas grade PTFE tape on the threads to reseal.

In retrospect, I don't think this had been painted - it was just REALLY dirty after years of road travel, mud, dirty water etc. I notice you do have to give everything a bit of a clean regularly. I think there should be some sort of cover that fits over the whole set of levers, knobs and dials of the gas tank.

Indeed...there should be a cover and lock but typically, these get ripped off the first time the owner forgets to close them after using the BBQ take off point etc. So lots of owners just leave them without a cover.
