The engine is a 2.1 MV , I bought it as a non runner ( believe it or not it actually did run... admittedly a tad lumpy ! ) The previous owner had just rebuilt the engine with donor heads to replace the original ones with snapped exhaust studs, It ran sweetly for a few hours until it misfired then pumped coolant out the exhaust...


Obviously the cylinder is now toast, and Im undecided whether to bother to rebuild it , but where has the bolt come from that did the damage ? ! Its a very fine thread so maybe a 8mm bolt, Im guessing that it must have gotten dropped down into the inlet tract then sucked into the cylinder .

If the shape is anything to go by its about the size of a tinware screw. It may have been languishing in the linlet pipe for years. It just needs extreme camber or to go round a roundabout too quick and in it goes. Could well have dropped in when the engine was partly stripped down in the past.

I hadnt thought about a tinware screw... but you could be spot on. What amazes me is the lack of damage to the bores, they must be pretty tough .

fortunately I have some spares that look slightly better condition.. A working 2.1 MV must be worth something , so maybe in the coming cold dark evenings it may be worth bolting it back together .
