Hi Guys,

Doing an oil change in the next few weeks when i get the chance. I have everything ready appart from the copper seal. Is this the one i need?

Is it as straight forward as the wiki makes out or should i look out for anything?

If your just doing an oil change, all you want is a new washer for the sump plug.

The one in your link is for a pressure relief valve. Its not all that hard to change your oil, just take your time, don't over fill, check for leaks and don't over tighten.

Definitly M14? Says you need a 13mm socket for the sump plug on the wiki...

It's not like a normal bolt, were you'd need a 17mm spanner for a 10mm thread, 13mm for 8mm etc.

I'm about to do mine, while the sun is out. I'll double check!

Standard dg sump plug is m14 thread with a reduced hex head because it sits in a recess, need a socket of 13mm or 1/2" will do
25Nm when you retighten if you have a torque wrench

or finger tight and then a 1/4 turn if you don't

Can anybody tell me the outer diameter for this washer? Id buy straight from Brikwerks but this is the only bit i need and it seems i have to order at least 5 quids worth of parts and thn pay at least 4 quids worth of postage.

Just 95p from GSF (under engine parts).

Buy a couple then you're not stuck next time or measure it and source similar locally.

As much as I love Brickwerks, I don't think Mr. Baxter will be offended if we buy our washers locally but just in case, perhaps we shouldn't tell him about this forum.................

Some things like nuts, bolts, washers and odd brake pipes are quicker/easier to get locally. To be fair to Simon, he is mail order and those costs have escalated in recent years through not fault of his own but equally its a good thing to support local businesses anyway if you can. Economics plays as much a part as quality.

You're right, plus if there's nothing else you need, then it's not viable to place an internet order. I need a vacuum advance unit, I'm thinking of what else I may also need while I'm at it to save me the postage costs in the future.

I've found some amazing places locally including the cheapest bolt place ever, a man who stocks ANY bearing, and various assorted businesses that have been great. My local gas place even replaced a pipe on my cooker and refused to take any money. The local independent tool shop ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S85AJyxSOL4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) is astounding - never yet caught him out - always seems to have what I want somewhere and at a great price. He also owns a bay!

Good to get out there on your two pins and see who does what. Saves a lot of time if you need something the same day and keeps people in my area employed. They also get to know you and will give discounts. Obviously some stuff isn't so easy to get that way but invariably they know someone who does. VW Commercial always helpful and not phased how big or small the order is. Often their prices are even cheaper than GSF - depends what it is.

I needed a new cover for my boat - getting one custom made via mail order would have been around £200 - a mate put me in touch with a retired sailmaker who does lorry tilts, £30! He only asked £20 to start with but I funded some of his Friday night in the pub also. The only problem was each time I went to see him it took over an hour as he likes to yarn. A proper Eastender from London who used to make sails for Thames barges and the like. Local definitely a winner there.
Anyway - why don't people just anneal their copper washers instead of faffing about trying to buy new? Throwaway society I suppose.

Local bearing place is faultless, they don't sell chocolate bearings and know their onions. (east anglian bearing service ltd in Whip Street, Ipswich if you are local - https://www.eabs.co.uk/) Take your old bearing in if you can't read the numbers and they can match it up.

Yes, don't get me wrong fromwhat iv bought so far everything seems to be very good quality and the postage times are great. Its just a shame i can't feel the same level of "i can relax and know this is going to be exactly what i need and work perfectly" on smaller orders. A small jiffy bag royal mail first class isnt more than a couple of quid :/ On the whole though a great company
