Hi,

First post, so be gentle .

I,m currently working my way through seam rash repairs, and metal replacement. nearly there now.

As I will soon be tackling the interiors, as a cabinet maker myself, i will be doing all the internal units.

I,d like to ask if anyone can point me towards a place that can spur my imagination a bit on the internals.

I do have my own extensive woodwork workshop, so basically nothing would be ruled out.

I am in the middle of an interior conversation.
Van is a twin slider that only used 1 door that seemed a shame.
I have full workshop facilities as do you.
I have made my own cabinets in 6mm birch ply to keep the weight down, with the correct design they are incredibly strong.
I now have twin sliders and I have the carpet to do.
Don't underestimate the time it will take.

I know all about time in cabinet construction, I have had a career in it.

Birch ply is extremely strong i agree. How did you join the carcases on gables ect.

Was it a knock down type of fitting, or direct mechanical fix, or additional timber.

Any pics at all. I do have plenty of time, as I,m currently an unemployed 59 year old, but also

have a 72 fasty and 76 beetle to do

I already had a ply floor so 25x30 frames were fitted (glue and screw) to attach the units plus a few brackets to the sides.
The units are glued and pined with a 6mm ply edge to cover pins and give the ply edge look. The main strength is in having exact cut shelves glued on ply batons.
A lot of time spent making 6mm square ply trim batons for edging and shelve supports.
The cooker unit has a250mm 1/4 arc that holds the gas bottles. Birch ply does not bend, I had to cut through all laminates bar the face steam and bend. The inside was then fiberglassed to seal and strengthen for the gas bottles.

I thought you might have used some face frames alright. Steaming and bending the curved section was probably
a pain alright. Laminated lighter material held around a former might have been an option, but either way, time consuming.

Its all time consuming really. Thing with a beetle or other car, is at least you dont have to make units

I still have the units from the Autohomes Karisma camper. But they need a bit of TLC, and I,m really opting for something different,

that would incorporate less grief in the removal or the fridge, as in the case of existing units.

Sounds interesting, do you have any photos?

I'm building my next cupboard in thin birch ply with ash edging.

Not yet waiting till the carpets in.
Its very nice to work with. Rubs down and varnish to a mirror finish, 8 coats with a sand between coats.

I think layout is something that you find out when you use the van, it soon becomes apparent what you like and what needs changing.

Definitely agree with that, had an autosleeper conversion for about 9 years, the layout worked well except for the bed being narrow, so when we converted our next van from a caravelle to a camper, based the layout pretty much the same, but made the units down the side of the bed slimmer to make way for a standard size double, works well for us.

I,ve had the camper about 2 years now, and really have no major issues on the layout. When I started the rash seam attack to cure it,
as I had to take the units out, I thought recently " mmmm.. maybe new units on the cards".

But looking at the original spec layout yesterday, I thought maybe a rebuild using the existing units as templates.

Some nice looking units on vw.interiors I must admit. But I,ll have a couple of weeks yet to get focused and decide for definite.

Location is the sunny ( sometimes) midlands of Ireland.
