rock n roll bed - 1" thick MDF!!

Honestly, some people.

For ages now I've had a full width DIY metal rock n roll bed which I'm about to remove (up for any offers) and replace with a commercial 3/4 one. The only thing that has prevented me starting the job was the sheer weight of replacement one. I well remember collecting it. Almost impossible to lift.

Managed (just) to get it indoors from the garage and heck, the back, seat and kickplate is faced with 1" MDF.

1" for goodness sake. When you consider that just two of the boards are around 4' x 18 inches, it becomes obvious WHY it was so bloomin heavy. Blast MDF - you can't even burn the stuff.

The only slight hiccup now is my LPG tank. Shaped like a long torpedo it fitted nicely under the full-width but the 3/4 hinges at one end will almost certainly foul on tank now. Different tank needed I think.

Why on earth would anyone use MDF in a camper, and not only MDF, but 1" thick MDF ?????

That's unfair. MDF is easy to dispose of. Just show it a photograph of a glass of water, and watch it dissolve into a splodge of sawdust...

Maybe they were thinking of soundproofing. The heavier something is, the better it is at blocking sound.

Good one. Soundproofing.

If I could get hold of the idiot that used such thick MDF, I'd put his head between the two boards then jump up and down on them and see if he could judge whether or not he could hear anything between his ears.

I suspect not, nor has he ever had anything between his ears.

Gone! Took great pleasure taking bed apart today, washing all the covers and driving up to the tip with that blasted MDF. Now replaced with thick ply, its as good as new and half the weight. I could at last lift the bed off the floor.

While I was at the tip, which now has a second-hand shop (most of which goes to charity), I picked up two top-quality cuisinart saucepans for just £2.50 for both. Perfect for camping. :D

When I was making my bed, I used 9mm birch ply with two 2x1 pine supports running the width of the seat base and the back. Solid as a rock and lightweight.

My last one (metal) was claimed by the scrap man on Sunday (rather sad). I did toy with the idea of passing it on but by the time I'd found someone who wanted it, arranged to be at the lockup, plus petrol there and back, it didn't seem viable. It was a good one (custom made) but I needed to move to a 3/4 one due to now ferrying a little girl as well as my son, to school and back. The new one means a change of LPG tank but thats not such a big deal really. :D
