Take it from someone who knows.....600watt just isn't powerful enough...we had an 800watt to start with and now 1500.

the other problem you usually find with a small oil filled is that you can't get the 600W heat from it continually which is what you want from an oil filled.
It heats up, switches off and then won't switch on again until it's cooled down, the thermostat is overridden by a thermal cut out.

Better to buy a larger oil filled with 500, 1000 and 1500W setting as said and just use it on 500W if you want consistent heating and low power, the extra cost of the rad is nothing compared to the electricity it will use in it's life.

Bit clueless about this, so might be a stupid question . . . . . . . but,

Are you all posting about using an oil filled rad to keep warm while camping, or for keeping the damp out while the van is not used over winter.

My bus has to live on the drive over winter, didn't know if a small oil filled rad set on low temp might just help keep damp out and not cost mega £$£$£$£$ to run ?

600w is about 10p/hr, £2.40/day, £72/month.

How much can you turn that rad down and it still be useful?

If you've got damp in your van, you'd be better off sorting the leaks - even temporarily.

1.5 Kw is a minimum for campers, I have found this is true.

Don't think it's damp because it's leaky (Pretty sure it's not air tight either ) it's just kinda that dewy feeling during the winter months that seems to get everywhere.

But for £72 a month I'll sure I'll live to endure it !

You need ventilation in a van thats not being driven daily, I have two large (home made) vents I fit in my windows, if I don't fit them van smells damp very soon, no major leaks either.

the front window type would be ok, vents centrally are better if you can make or buy them.

I was suggesting a power of (1500 watts) as a compromise because of size.

1500 watt oil filled heaters are still reasonably small.....you could go 2.4 or even 3KW but then they get large and cumbersome.
